Don’t let fear get in the way of your child’s dental health. We customize our sedation methods for each child and we’ll always take the time to discuss your child’s fears and anxieties with you directly. We work hard to find ways to help every child feel more comfortable and safe in the dentist’s chair. We have decades of experience working with children, particularly those with special needs or dental anxiety.

Is It Normal for Children to Be Afraid of the Dentist?

Many children feel nervous or even fearful when anticipating an appointment. That’s okay! We understand that our patients aren't all the same, and we have great news: you have options! Your child can experience dental treatment with comfortable, customized care and multiple methods of sedation. We can use a combination of numbing and sedation to ensure your child feels comfortable and confident throughout their treatment - call us today!

Is Sedation Safe for Children?

Sedation dentistry is completely safe for kids, and our experienced Clear Lake team will be with you and your child every step of the way. Children who are as young as 2 years old are candidates for sedation dentistry, depending on their weight and overall health. Any sedation is done with proper and adequate monitoring required for your child's safety. Sedation can help make the entire process much easier for both you and your children whether you are coming in for a checkup, filling, or dental crown.

What Is Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas is readily available in our Clear Lake pediatric dental office and provides an excellent way to combat anxiety for most dental procedures. Laughing gas is a great option for children with a mild to moderate fear of the dentist. Using a special, comfortably-fitting mask that rests on your child’s nose, your child will inhale laughing gas during their treatment, which creates a pleasant feeling of euphoria that can be easily controlled. Laughing gas is the mildest form of sedation that we use and lasts only a few minutes once the mask is removed.

Laughing gas induces feelings of relaxation and well-being during treatment. We can easily customize the level of sedation for each child, which takes effect within minutes. As a mild sedation, your child won’t experience any significant side effects. At the end of treatment, the sedation caused by the laughing gas dissipates almost immediately.

What is Oral Sedation?

This method creates a deeper level of sedation than laughing gas, yet it is just as easy to administer. For children who have more severe dental anxiety or are very nervous about an appointment, oral conscious sedation is recommended. The proper dose of the anti-anxiety medication will be administered at our Clear Lake office under careful supervision.

Dr. Brock will discuss your child’s particular needs to determine if this option will work best. In addition to making your child’s experience more comfortable, oral sedative medications can help us to complete your child’s treatment in fewer appointments and finish complex procedures in less time. While your child is being treated, Dr. Brock will carefully monitor your child’s vital signs to ensure that their experience is completely safe.

What is IV Sedation?

With IV sedation, the sedative medication will be carefully delivered intravenously. Since it is delivered directly to the bloodstream, this form of sedation is very powerful and takes effect quickly. Your child will still be conscious, but they will likely remember very little of their appointment and may even fall asleep during treatment.

Dr. Brock works with a team of local, experienced anesthesiologists to administer IV sedation. If he determines that this form of sedation is the right choice for your child, he will bring in an IV sedation specialist to oversee the entire procedure and ensure your child is safe and comfortable throughout their visit at our Clear Lake pediatric dental office.
