Many people feel anxious before and during dental procedures.
It's okay to feel nervous or even fearful when anticipating an appointment. We understand that our patients aren't all the same, and we have great news: you have options! You can experience dental treatment in a comfortable, customized approach with several different methods of sedation.
The most common forms of sedation used in dentistry are inhalation, oral, and intravenous sedation. While making dentistry much easier for you, it is important to understand that they are not pain-killers, and regular numbing medications still prove essential. But sedation will make every part of your treatment more enjoyable if you're anxious.
A Safe And Effective Option For Children Of All Ages
Sedation dentistry is completely safe for kids, and our pediatric dentists are qualified experts that will be with you and your child every step of the way. Children who are as young as 2 years old are candidates for sedation dentistry, depending on their weight and overall health. Sedation helps make the entire process of a procedure like a dental check-up or a filling much easier for both you and your children.
Understanding Sedation Options for Kids
At Brock & Casas Pediatric Dentistry, we offer two types of sedation: minimal-inhaled sedation (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation.
Laughing gas is readily available in our office and provides an excellent way to combat anxiety for most dental procedures.
Laughing gas is a great option for children with a mild-to-moderate fear of the dentist. Using a special, comfortably-fitting mask that rests on your child’s nose, your child will inhale laughing gas during their treatment, and this creates a pleasant feeling of euphoria that can be easily controlled. Laughing gas lasts only a few minutes once the mask is removed.
The mildest form of sedation that we use, laughing gas flows through a comfortably fitting mask that rests over your child’s nose. Laughing gas is an odorless gas that is used in combination with pure oxygen to induce a feeling of relaxation and well-being during treatment. Laughing gas often creates a pleasant feeling of euphoria that can make ordinary things seem funnier. We can easily customize the level of sedation for each child, which takes effect within minutes.
As a mild sedation, your child won’t experience any short-term memory loss as they might with other forms of sedation. At the end of treatment, the sedation caused by the laughing gas dissipates almost immediately, with absolutely no lasting effects.
This method creates a deeper level of sedation than possible with laughing gas, yet is just as easy to administer.
For children who have more severe dental anxiety, or are very nervous about an appointment, oral conscious sedation is recommended. This is a pill-based form of treatment that your child takes about an hour before their appointment. This anti-anxiety medication usually also functions as a sedative. Your child may not even remember the appointment once it’s over!
Dr. Brock and Dr. Casas will prescribe a medication that your child takes before their appointment to reduce anxiety. A wide variety of medications are available for this type of sedation, and Dr. Brock and Dr. Casas will carefully discuss your child’s particular needs to determine which choice would work best. However, all are classified as anti-anxiety medications and achieve the same result: reducing and even eliminating the anxiety of dental treatment.
In addition to making your child’s experience more comfortable, oral sedative medications help to reduce your child’s memory of the experience. It also allows us to complete your child’s treatment in fewer appointments and to finish complex procedures in less time. While your child is being treated, Dr. Brock and Dr. Casas carefully monitors your child’s vital signs to ensure that their experience is as safe as possible. Another advantage to this type of sedation is that it can safely be used along with laughing gas for an even deeper feeling of relaxation. Because the effects of oral sedation last longer than with laughing gas alone, your child will need someone to monitor them at home for a while after the procedure.
