Sedation Dentistry Is Becoming Much More Common For Kids – Here's Why

At Big Picture Pediatric Dentistry, we’re the best choice for pediatric sedation dentistry in Houston, and more parents than ever are choosing to have their children sedated during their appointments at our office. Why? Here are just a few reasons why sedation is becoming more popular, and why it may be a great option for your little one.

1. You Have A Lot Of Sedation Options For Your Kids

At Big Picture Pediatric Dentistry, we offer three different types of sedation for your kids, including:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation – Nitrous oxide is delivered through a comfortable nose mask, and is the most minimal method of sedation. Your child will still be awake and alert, but will feel less anxious and fearful, and can remain more comfortable. This method of sedation wears off after about 5 minutes, so you can quickly get back to your day-to-day activities.
  • Oral conscious sedation – This is a pill or liquid oral sedative medicine that your child will take before your appointment. It will make them feel very groggy and drowsy. They may fall asleep, and will likely forget most of what happens during their appointment. It will take a few hours for the side effects to wear off after your appointment.
  • IV sedation – IV sedation uses the same drugs as oral conscious sedation, but they are delivered into a vein, which strengthens their effects. Your child will likely sleep through their whole appointment. However, they will not be unconscious, and can be woken up and can respond to commands, if necessary.

Depending on your child’s level of anxiety, any of these methods of sedation may be right for you. You can consult with Dr. Jason Brock to learn more about each one, and see if sedation is right for your child.

2. Sedation Dentistry Makes Dental Visits Easier For Your Family

Sedation dentistry is very convenient for kids of all ages. Your kids won’t have to feel as nervous or scared about coming to the dentist, and they will be more likely to stay still and behave during their treatment, even if they must sit in the dentist’s chair for a long dental procedure.

It can also help with issues like a strong gag reflex in your child or fear of numbing needles, ensuring that they can get the treatment they need without complications.

3. Prevent Your Kids From Feeling Anxious About Going To The Dentist In The Future

Many people develop dental anxiety because of fear and trauma they experienced at the dentist as a child. And while the team at Big Picture Pediatric Dentistry will always provide your child with gentle care, we understand that dentistry can still be scary.

Sedation dentistry can help your child maintain a good attitude toward dentistry, and avoid developing anxiety and fear of the dentist in the future. With sedation, they will be able to relax and maintain a good attitude about dentistry as they grow up.
