5 Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay

At Brock and Casas Pediatric Dentistry, we focus on preventive care and education to keep little teeth healthy. As compassionate dentists, we want to help you and your family avoid common dental health issues like cavities and decay, so we do everything we can to keep parents informed about proper oral hygiene habits. We’ve put together our top tips for helping kids avoid cavities and keep smiling with ease:

1. Keep Up with Brushing and Flossing

We know it seems obvious, but proper brushing and flossing is your child’s first line of defense when it comes to preventing tooth decay. Daily habits formed early will last a lifetime, so it’s critical to get your children into a routine that involves brushing and flossing 2-3 times per day. To help ensure that kids are maintaining proper technique, it is important to supervise while they brush until they can correctly maintain their oral health on their own.

2. Visit Brock and Casas Every Six Months

Routine visits to the dentist are also critical when it comes to maintaining optimal health and avoiding cavities. During regular cleanings, our pediatric dentists will use specialized tools to clean hard-to-reach surfaces of your child’s teeth that cannot be addressed with brushing and flossing alone.

3. Fluoride Treatments and Sealants

During preventive appointments, we will suggest fluoride treatments and sealants to reverse any signs of decay and prevent cavities from forming in your child’s rear molars. By taking a proactive approach to dental care and protecting cavity-prone teeth from direct contact with acidic, sugary foods, your child is much less likely to experience tooth decay.

4. Eat Less Sugar and More Fiber

A diet low in sugar and high in fiber is best for a child’s oral health. Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables help keep teeth and gums clean, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, and other dairy products encourage saliva, which keeps your mouth free from plaque buildup and decay.

5. Educate Your Children About Oral Health

The more kids know about their teeth and gums, the more likely they are to want to care for them with proper oral hygiene. Watch fun and informative videos with your children and answer any questions they have about their dental health. Tell and show your little ones why teeth are important and give them a better understanding of why oral care is important. This will help when you ask them to brush their teeth in the morning and before bed!
